Bridge (cycle, horse and foot) from Halgavor Plantation

This distinctive bridge near Lanhydrock House over the A30 carries part of the National Cycle Network. It was built for the 2000 Millennium. According to the architects: The Halgavor Bridge carries pedestrians, cyclists and horses across the A30 near Bodmin in Cornwall. It has a striking 48m suspension span and an innovative glass fibre reinforced plastic deck. This is the first publicly funded GRP bridge in the UK and its pioneering design set the standard for a new generation of bridges in advanced composite materials. The need for easy maintenance and rapid construction to minimise disruption to road traffic led directly to the selection of lightweight self-finished GRP materials which are durable and require little or no maintenance. The deck is hung from conventional steel suspension cables, with a radial pattern of stainless steel hangers and parapet posts which give the bridge a light, elegant appearance. The finished deck surface is made from recycled car tyres, which create a low maintenance surface suitable for all bridge users.
