View eastward, towards Reading and London, from the Up main platform. In the early days of the main-line Diesels you frequently saw the new traction being assisted - or rescued - by the old. Here the 15.45 Paddington - Weston-super-Mare has 4-6-0 No. 5018 'St Mawes Castle' (built 7/32, withdrawn 3/64) piloting North British Loco Type 4 (later Class 43) 'Warship' B-B Diesel-Hydraulic No. D848 'Sultan' (built 4/61, withdrawn 3/69!).
