The shed was built in 1898 by the Highland Railway to house engines for the Forres portions of trains and to provide pilot engines for the Carr Bridge route to Inverness. The shed closed in 1965 when the forres route was closed to passenger traffic. It was reopened by the Strathspey Railway and is their main maintenance facility. The new shed to the left is a carriage maintenance facility.
