A westbound train on its way out of Nottingham is about to pass under Lenton Lane. The line curving off to the left of the train links the Derby-Nottingham line to the Leen Valley line to Mansfield and Worksop. In the days of steam this line saw a procession of loaded (southbound) and empty (northbound) coal trains from the Leen Valley pits. This was the first spot I came to collect engine numbers: in the long hot summer of 1959 my friends and I sat on the footbridge which once stood where the trees are on the right of this shot; under it sidings led to Clifton Colliery and the ordnance factory, both long gone. Nottingham Castle is on the horizon, above the third carriage of the train.
