The low building at the right is where sulphur was burned: exposing the cloth to the gaseous product of this bleached it, (and incidentally killed any insect life which had found a home in it). It is said that athsmatic children were sometimes put in the sulphur houses to improve their breathing, though it is far from clear how exposure to a highly toxic gas like sulphur dioxide could have done them any good.
