View eastward, towards London; ex-London & South Western Waterloo - West of England main line. The 16.30 Waterloo - Bournemouth/Weymouth 'The Royal Wessex' is for a while being hauled by the first (No. 10201) of the three pioneer Diesels designed by Bulleid for the SR and built at Ashford Works in 1950-54. From 4/55 they were transferred to the LMR and became the basis of the later English-Electric Type 4 1-Co-Co-1 BR Class 40s.
