The main part of the church was built between 1829 and 1831 to the designs of James Savage, while the tower was added in 1866 as a memorial to John and Elizabeth Davis. One historic image that the photographer found elsewhere on the internet http://genpals.co.uk/blog/st-marys-church-ilford/ shows that the tower once supported a steeple about two-thirds its own size. Although it is Locally Listed, perhaps surprisingly it is not a Listed Building on the English Heritage National List. The church is set firmly in the Catholic Tradition of the Church of England.
