The pillar is one of two (the other has no greyhound) which form part of a now blocked gateway http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2385126 into the old school house http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2385114 The church also has a similar gateway http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/125588 The greyhounds may have something to do with Lord Lonsdale.
