The character on the sign resembles John Bull. This collective name for a sturdy Englishman was first used by John Arbuthnot in 1712. The same writer designated the French as Lewis Baboon, the Dutch as Nicholas Frog, and so on, but only 'John Bull' was taken up by other writers.
