At the left is a side chapel on the north wall. The carved choir stalls and pulpit are early 20th century, but the sounding board above the pulpit dates from 1797 (Church website - http://black-torrington-benefice.org.uk/St%20Mary's%20History.htm ) . One of the brass plaques on the wall to the right commemorates the Rev. John "Jack" Russell, who bred the hunting terrier which is named after him. He was appointed to the rectorship of Black Torrington at the age of 84, and remained until his death aged 87 in 1883. Before that, he was rector for more than forty years at Image , where he is buried.
