This is a Norman Church, which dates from about 1120, and is the oldest building in Hertford. The east wall has a distinctive rounded apse. The church served as the parish church of Bengeo until the larger Holy Trinity Church opened in 1855. St. Leonard's stood empty and unused for some years, until restoration and refitting was carried out between 1884 and 1894. The church is used for Sunday services during summer months.
