Originally a religious symbol, referring either to the star of Bethlehem or to the Virgin Mary, one of whose titles is 'the Star of the Sea'. Since 1634 a sixteen-pointed star has also appeared in the arms of the Worshipful Company of Innholders, formerly a guild of innkeepers. The Star as a pub name dates from the 15th century.
