Cae White is a group of four semi-detached houses on the west side of the B4246 opposite the point where the B-road changes its name from North Street to Abergavenny Road. The name Cae White is an oddity. Cae is Welsh for field, enclosure, pitch. But the Welsh name on the street sign underneath Cae White is Maes Gwyn. The oddity is that Maes is another Welsh word for field, though from a root meaning something spacious, an open field. Quite why Maes was used to translate Cae (or vice-versa) is a mystery to this contributor. The road junction signs show left for Varteg (3 miles) and Pontypool (6 miles), right for Abergavenny (6 miles) and Brynmawr (4 miles).
