The East Lancashire Road has very limited connections with the M60 (originally the M62). In particular, there is no good connection with the M60 southwards. Here, in the eastbound direction, vehicles may flow from the A580 to the Yorkshire-bound M60 via slip roads almost one mile in length. Between 1971 and 1974 this slip road formed part of the principal route for Trans-Pennine traffic between Merseyside and West Yorkshire, pending completion of the M62 between Worsley and Warrington.
