The magnificent prospect of Lancashire's premier highway in the pre-motorway age is exemplified by this view. A revolutionary piece of construction, rightly celebrated by Lancashire County Council here: http://www.lancashire.gov.uk/environment/historichighways/eastlancs/index.asp. The importance of the "East Lancs" can hardly be understated. Until the 1970s, it was the ONLY dual carriageway ordinary road for miles around. Take away the motorways and the East Lancs and the indirectness of communication between Liverpool and industrial Lancashire becomes obvious. Lancashire: first and best!
