This is a Gresley J39 0-6-0 (No. 64905), stripped of its boiler and almost everything else, outside the Stratford Old Works, which was the original section of the extensive ex-Great Eastern Locomotive Works - still actively employed in major repair work at that time. Believe it or not, this engine went on in active service for another five years.
