A 1930s art deco block, built on the former site of the Edinburgh terminus of the Union Canal at Port Hopetoun. It was built as a government tax office, but later converted into apartments. These were refurbished and upgraded in 1983, with an added swimming pool, sauna, gymnasium and laundry room. I walked through the building once to take a peek inside. It felt more like how I imagine the Empire State Building in New York than a typical Edinburgh interior. When I came across a grey-haired painter applying his roller to one of the corridor walls, I remarked in passing, "You know, I have the feeling Cary Grant is going to appear at any moment." "I AM Cary Grant," he quipped back. Image
