The name of the house derives from the Saxon 'hean teag' meaning at the high enclosure which suggests the area was cleared at an early date. The house itself dates from the 16th century replacing an earlier wooden framed building from the late 1300s and is the larger part of the building to the right, the bay facing the footpath was added in the 1930s.
