From the mid-1900s until the 1970s post office buildings were designed and built by government architects. When the Post Office was no longer administered by the Civil Service, commissions for new buildings were won by architects in private practice. The post office in North Street is an example of this new practice. it was designed by Roman Halter Associates, and opened in about 1972, and closed in 2006 as the Post Office moved to new premises, following a long tradition of the Post Office occupying successive premises in a town or city.
