The trooper on the left is an auxiliary from Britannia who would have been less well-paid than his citizen legionary counterpart. He will be posted abroad but has the prospect of eventual citizenship at the end of his period of service. This will also be automatically conferred on his children. The lady with the over-large helmet is NOT a real Roman soldier - they would never parade around with a dog on their shoulder. The re-enactors are part of 'Deva Victrix' from Chester http://www.romantoursuk.com/deva_victrix.htm a group dedicated to re-creating our former colonisers as authentically as possible.
