Belisha Beacons

This pedestrian crossing at the north end of Ravelston Dykes Road is guarded by Belisha beacons, named after Leslie Hore-Belisha (1895–1957) who, as Minister of Transport, was in post when they were introduced in 1935. The amber globes on these poles seem to have faded almost to white. The response of some motorists when I crossed the road here suggested that they were not aware that pedestrians have right of way over motor traffic on these crossings. Image] is just beyond the knee-high wall on the far side of the crossing.
