This relatively barren expanse used to be the world famous Swan Hunter shipyard where ships such as Mauretania, Carpathia, Ark Royal and Illustrious were constructed. Now, instead of building world-class ships the site will be used to dismantle/decommission gas platforms from the North Sea. After 140 years of shipbuilding the site will serve as a scrap-metal yard (recycling site).
