This building developed from an octagonal tower originally built as a racing grandstand by Ferdinando, Earl of Derby and King of the Isle of Man in 1593. Extended in various stages through the centuries, it has been a private home and subsequently a convalescent home for railwaymen, then lying empty for some years before being restored as the present hotel.
