Looking across the 'Rec' as it was called when set up at the end of Prospect Road sometime in the 1950s. Before that it was Fred Rhodes' Field. Fred Rhodes was the local independent butcher in competition with Longwood Co-op and had a double fronted shop in Longwood Gate down by Joe Hoyles' mill. At the same level as the rec in a strip at the back of the nearest mill building were a string of air raid shelters presumably for the mill workers where we played on occasion though told not to by authority and parents.
