St Mary's Church overlooks the High Street in Mold. It is the Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin in the Diocese of St Asaph. The present church stands on the site of an earlier, Norman, church built sometime during the twelfth or early thirteenth century. Records show that a church existed here in 1253. The building of the present church was financed by Margaret Beaufort, around 1490, to commemorate the victory of her son, Henry Tudor, over Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth Field and his enthronement as King of England in 1485. After the death of Lady Margaret in 1509, a lack of funds delayed the completion of the church was not until 1597, well over a century after building had first begun! Church records from the mid 18th century show that the tower along with the fabric of the whole church was giving rise to some anxiety. Some twenty years later, the tower was eventually demolished and the present tower was built during 1768-73. As with many old churches St Mary's has been renovated and restored over the years, the major restoration being undertaken between 1853 and 1856 under the direction of Sir George Gilbert Scott. Further restoration work took place in 1911, during the 1950s and again between 1998 and 2001.
