Despite its appearance, this is fundamentally a Victorian building, opened in 1887 when the old chapel http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2320219 became too small. However, in the 1960s, the church was suffering the effects of subsidence from the nearby Calverton Colliery. After emergency repairs in 1969, a period of time elapsed to allow for any settlement before more substantive repairs were carried out from 1976, resulting in the current appearance of the building. These repairs were at the expense of the National Coal Board.
