The bridge was built to carry the busy South Circular Road over a railway line. A flight of stairs leading down from the bridge enable pedestrians to use a subway to cross the road here, particularly to reach two railway stations (Catford and Catford Bridge) which are on the opposite side of the road. The subway is now also part of a National Cycle Network Route, NCN21, which links Greenwich with Eastbourne.
