These houses stand on the hill up to Denbigh castle with a commanding view over the town. Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, who had acquired the castle in 1563 from Elizabeth I, decided to build a church very close to this spot that he hoped would become a cathedral taking the place of St Asaph. The building was never completed but the half-built remains still stand.
