Gardner Street

Head west up Church Street then turn north into Gardner Street. The street's name is a reminder of the origin of the land it was built on. The Laines were small strips of land owned by tenant husbandmen who often grew and supplied the then small village with its produce from their market gardens. Gardner Street is the second of the four principal shopping streets in the North Laine area. The black building to the right is Komedia a comedy/music venue that has been operating in the town from the 1980s but only moved to the street 10 years ago, prior to that it was a Tesco Supermarket then a flea market. The street had been known for its wacky shopfronts but the council has stepped in with its planning laws to return them to more sober frontages in keeping with the historical area. Not the correct decision in my opinion. If you want to eat vegetarian burgers or pies with many different fillings, get yourself a tattoo, buy Mod clothing to take you back to the 60s or clothing that isn't the High Street this is the place for you.
