It is said that a lodge was built here in the 1660's, but the present building looks rather later, and the British Listed Buildings website ascribes it to the reign of George II (1727-1760). This is a view of the south façade, with its two flanking pavilions. Two more flank the north front. The most notable resident was the Duke of Clarence (later King William IV), who lived here with his mistress and their ten illegitimate children. At the beginning of the 20th century Queen Victoria made a gift of the house to the National Physical Laboratory, which still occupies it.
