This is an abandoned pumphouse belonging to the West Berks Groundwater Scheme. Coustructed during the 1970s by Thames Water Authority this was a series of pumped boreholes to be used for river augmentation in times of drought. Most of the scheme is retained in full working order and is now run by the Environment Agency but the borehole here had a very poor yield and it wasn't considered worthwhile to keep it in service. Thames Water returned it to service for a while during refurbishments at Brightwalton pumping stn. just up the road, but since then it has remained abandoned. I am not sure what the future will be for it.
