Pergola in Anniversary Gardens

Tucked into the south east corner of West Green park, the Anniversary Garden was opened in 1997 to celebrate 50 years of Crawley new town. The area had previously been a putting green but Council staff transformed it into a quiet place where visitors can escape from the buzz of the town centre. The mixed formal garden is surrounded by a beech hedge, which provides protection to the more tender plants by creating its own micro climate. The central feature is a pergola with wisteria and climbing roses. A peaceful place to sit or stroll, the Anniversary Garden has herbaceous perennials, shrubs, roses, bulbs and ornamental trees offering interest and colour throughout the year. A large number of highly perfumed plants were chosen for the garden, making it particularly attractive for the blind or partially-sighted. For wildlife lovers the plants attracts a wide range of insects and birds.
