The Queen Elizabeth II Dock was opened by the Port of Manchester On January 19th 1954. The new dock was built to provide berthing facilities for the ever increasing size of the oil tankers that were too large be accommodated on the canal. The entrance to the oil dock is just before the entrance to the Eastham Locks, which is the entrance to the Manchester Ship Canal, therefore solving the problem of getting large vessels up the Ship Canal.
