Cardiff Canton type 3 based class 37 locos were a regular sight for many years hauling coal from the valleys to the ports or power stations. Not any more. All the mines are shut and the only coal that travels along this route is now open cast coal loaded in much bigger wagons hauled by newer Class 66 type 5 locos. Seen near Taff Merthyr in those days one could chase the train by car down the valley getting a number of photos as the line speed was quite low so it was easy to beat the train down the grade.
