Originally erected nearby in The Square in the 1920s, the memorial was deemed a potential collision hazard, so was moved to the Welfare Ground in 1934. It was moved to its present location, on the north side of Hillside Avenue, in 1960. The War Memorial was given Grade II listed status in 2000.
