The spire is an Ordnance Survey intersected station trig point, http://www.trigpointinguk.com/trigs/trig-details.php?t=10595 A new office has been built on the south face of the tower: on the north face is a toilet block. The south face extension has destroyed an OS 1GL bolt benchmark (levelled in 1843) which is described on the Bench Mark Database at http://www.bench-marks.org.uk/bm28160
