Old Castle Inn (2), 10-11 West Castle Street

The inn is named after Bridgnorth's castle, which was already in a ruinous state in the first half of the 16th century. Then in the Civil War in 1646 , Parliamentary troops blew up the tower, of which there is now just a little left. This inn probably dates from the 18th or early 19th century. It is shown in the 1881 census under its present name, and nearby probably at no. 8 was the Bird In Hand Inn, now long gone. Next door, as can be seen, is Blunts, a shoe shop. It's rather surprising the planners allow such a hideous shop sign, which is totally out of scale and sympathy with the historic buildings which surround it. Image Image
