The entrance in Toll Gavel to Ellen Keningham's almshouses, which were built in 1861. In 1851 Ellen's husband Robert was a Borough Magistrate and retired Druggist and Chemist and they were living in Cross Street. It seems Robert died in 1859 so Ellen probably gave the almshouses in his memory.
