Taken from the junction with Redgill Lane. Originally the main east-west road through the northern part of Chailey until it was superseded by the modern A272 built in the 1770s on a ridge to the south. The straightness of the lane and a nearby field name with common in it suggests a small green was once located here and enclosed.
