Webb Mausoleum, Milford

Unusually-designed mausoleum in St John the Evangelist churchyard at Milford. The Webbs lived in Milford House, about 500 metres north-east of the church. Thanks, David Webb - "Philip Barker Webb was a botanist, and author of papers on natural history. He was the grandson of Philip Carteret Webb of Busbridge Hall, and the eldest of three sons of Philip Smith Webb of Milford House, and Hannah, daughter of Sir Robert Barker, Bart. He was born in 1793, and was educated at Harrow and Oxford. He died in 1854 and is buried in a mausoleum in the churchyard at Milford. His will of 1850 gave details that he had left £10 to his mother, and each of his nephews and nieces to be ‘laid out in purchase of some small memorial for me’. That his body was to be embalmed and deposited in a mausoleum which ‘may be erected in my lifetime or by my trustees, the form of a pyramid is objectionable and they should select some other form, not in gothic or Architectural style’. The trustees were to place inside the marble bust of his mother and himself, executed in Rome in 1819 by the Sculptor Cipriani".
