St Michael, Poplar Walk

A large, interesting church of 1880-83 with an apsidal east end (Image]), two square turrets and a spire. The incomplete porch tower (left) was intended to be capped by a tall spire. The architect was John Loughborough Pearson and the interior is considered one of his best. Grade I listed. Pearson (1817-97) worked for Ignatius Bonomi, Anthony Salvin and Philip Hardwick before establishing his own practice in 1843. He worked in the Gothic style, becoming one of the leading Victorian church architects.
