Brutal and unnatural are the only adjectives for the sea-front area along this stretch of coast. This low-lying area was once the estuary of the ancient River Conwy, which was diverted through the gap between Bryn Euryn and Bryn Pydew Image when ice dammed its direct route to the sea. Its vulnerability is legendary, and a disastrous washout of the dunes carrying the original toll-road was the ultimate reason for closure of the electric tramway. These works date from the 1990's.
