Sickert is one of the many nineteenth-century figures to find themselves placed in the frame as Jack the Ripper by conspiracy theorists. This is nonsense, of course, but his paintings do certainly seem to give off a negative attitude to women (and life in general): a counterbalance to the inevitable cheery thoughts of "I'm Sorry, I Haven't a Clue" that run through one's mind on Mornington Crescent.
