This stone stump is all that is left of an ancient cross by the road junction here. It's marked in old script on the 25.000 map. Apparently it was destroyed during the civil war, so it's amazing that this remnant has been left undisturbed, although it looks like it's been hit a few times. There is a brief ref. to it on http://www.easthagbourne.net/history/fire.shtml which doesn't really tell you much, but is quite interesting about the old right of Sanctuary.
