The meadow west of Princess Charlotte Wood has a large conservation headland on its western side where recent fencing is crossed by a stile carrying a public footpath from Boldron village to Barnard Castle Lane. Another public footpath runs parallel with the fence along the headland (quite rough underfoot), north to Boldron Whins, and south towards the A66. There is quite a lot of new fencing in this area since, despite fences needing to be renewed several times a century, the cost of this is regarded as less than that of maintaining old hedges, most of which have decayed away, leaving nothing but shallow ditches and mature hedgerow trees such as this oak.
