Newquay Avenue and HYF 752, 1958

The shining 1947 Standard 8 was the first car my father bought, in 1956. It is standing outside the house where my parents lived from 1946-68 (Image] - not visible in this shot) and it looks as if Dad and I had just finished polishing it. How few cars there were on the street fifty-odd years ago by comparison with today: Image Other signs of the fifties include the dark woodwork (mostly green) of the houses and the gas street lamp behind the telegraph pole. The Capitol Cinema is on the right, at the junction with Churchfield Lane, and the cherry trees in the lovely garden behind Towlson's sweet shop show above the car. The three-storey terrace in the background is on Alfreton Road (compare with Image]), with the chip shop on the corner of Bobbers Mill Road partly obscured by a Fordson (I think) van turning into Churchfield Lane. Newquay Avenue and the Capitol Cinema were built on a greenfield site in the late 1930s. The garden walls (like those of most genteel Nottingham houses from Victorian times onwards) are of Bulwell stone.
