The Erewash Canal preservationists were installing this engine and a reciprocating pump in a tiny pump house by the basin. I have no idea whether this was ever finished and if it works. There was certainly no boiler plant and it would require a big compressor to work at any speed. The engine was by Matthew Paul & Co Ltd of Dumbarton and had been used at the Star Brewery of James Shipstone at New Basford. It is thought to have been removed in about 1990 and I have no idea how we managed it to track it down to this unlikely location. The engine is of 10 horsepower and the flywheel is 28" diameter, to give some idea of scale.
