This is a tiny offshoot of the River Tame, but looking at the land I think that in times of flood (which are not infrequent) this little backwater links up with another leg of the Tame forming a small island (which itself may get flooded). The Tame is quite interesting here, as a Flood Relief Channel splits the river into two parts forming a long lozenge shaped island from near Lady Bridge (beneath the castle in Tamworth) to just before where this photo was taken; this rejoining point can be seen here Image] See also Image] which shows the dry course that links to this backwater in times of flood, and also shows the bridge from which this photo was taken.
