Ira Aldridge, "the African Roscius", was a pioneering black actor in the 19th century (Roscius was a famous Roman actor whose skill was legendary). This was taken shortly after the blue plaque went up and a few days before the official unveiling. The records of the abolished Greater London Council indicate that a plaque for Aldridge had been under consideration in the early 1980s, so he got there at last.
