This curious farm-house is shown on the map as 'Boatrick House'. I believe it started life as a Dutch barn, a good many years ago - and still has a corrugated iron roof. So it was a pioneer barn-conversion (of sorts), long before the idea became fashionable. Anyway, whatever the map says, local people never call this building anything other than 'the Black Barn'. It is very much a local landmark, being the only inhabited building on Cliffe Marshes. There used to be a row of ex-Coastguard cottages further west, at about TQ 714 776, but these were demolished in the early 1990's. Painting the place white is a recent development - you might call it 're-branding'.
